Overview

The Circle of Security Classroom Approach (COSC) is an eight-chapter professional development series designed to help promote an understanding of attachment theory and offer support to classroom teachers.  It is modeled after the Circle of Security Parenting series.

The Circle of Security Classroom (COSC) Approach is designed to enhance educators’ abilities to form secure relationships and offers critical organizing principles from attachment theory to improve educator confidence and competence in relationship building.  This, in turn, fosters strong secure educator-child relationships, and ultimately, child learning.  This series meets criteria for the 4 hours of Infant/Toddler Specific training for NM Childcare licensing.

Objective
  • Increase educator’s capacity to identify attachment needs using the Circle of Security graphic
  • Increase educator’s ability to read young children's cues
  • Increase empathy for the child
  • Increase educator’s capacity to regulate stressful emotional states (their own and their children’s)
  • Increase educator’s capacity to provide comfort when a child is in distress
  • Increase educator’s capacity to self-reflect
  • Increase educator’s ability to read young children’s miscues
  • Decrease negative attributions of the educator regarding the child's motivations
  • Increase educator’s capacity to pause, reflect, and chose security-promoting caregiving behaviors
  • Increase educator’s ability to recognize ruptures in the relationship and facilitate repairs
